Delighted to join the Research Institute at University of the Arts Helsinki as a visiting researcher. The newly established Research Institute engages cross-artistic and interdisciplinary research projects across the three Academies at Uniarts Helsinki through thematic research networks and international partners.

At the Research Institute I’ll be working closely with faculty, postdocs and doctoral researchers on transdisciplinary initiatives at the intersection of science, technology, and the arts, while conceptualizing a new documentary film project critically examining the role of AI in warfare. >> Uniarts Research Profile

After 5 years as Professor of Practice at Aalto University Department of Computer Science I’m looking forward to transitioning into a new phase of my academic, artistic and professional life. While Uniarts Helsinki offers an engaging platform for such exploration I’m also in the process of consideration for permanent faculty positions in Finland and abroad, and developing a new AI ThinkLab to continue efforts on inclusive, responsible and human-centered AI initiatives in society.

It’s been a wonderful journey being at MIT Media Lab, The New School and Aalto University in exciting academic roles over the past 25 years, and I’ve been so fortunate working with amazing people and research initiatives at each institution with nurturing collaborators and mentors. I’m especially indebted to students in my CRAI-CIS research group, faculty collaborators at Aalto and other universities, and the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI), who’ve made this a special experience in Helsinki over the past 5 years.

While the future remains uncertain, the pathways ahead are exciting and I know we must cherish these moments of transition…
